Enjoy the game for recreational purposed or to enter chess as a competitive sport with opportunities to compete in scholastic and United States Chess Federation competition.
Become acquainted with the basic elements of the game, how pieces move, rules of capture, basic combinations, elementary strategy, and checkmate.

Cost: $30 Members $45 Nonmembers
Volunteer Instructor: Dr. Joseph L. Graves Jr, Associate Dean for Research, Joint School of Nanoscience and Nanoengineering, North Carolina A&T State University and UNC Greensboro. Dr. Graves is an internationally known scientist and a life-long chess player and instructor. He is a rated United States Chess Federation Player with over 500 wins in competitive tournaments in his career.

Cost: Free to YMCA Members (registration required) or $45.00 Non-members
Purpose: Purpose: To allow youth and adults to play and practice their chess skills to improve their critical thinking and strategies against their peers in a fun and friendly environment. It will inspire everyone to continue to unlock his or her passion for chess. Through the Chess Club, youth and adults will experience growth they may not think they had by playing chess with other people at all levels. The ultimate goal is to encourage all to gain confidence in their discipline and love for the game.
Volunteer Chess Coach: Derek Chen is a rising junior at the Early College at Guilford. He began playing chess competitively at the age of 6 and is now a United States Chess Federation Class A player as well as a chess tournament director. Derek is an experienced chess player with over 250 rated victories and a two-time North Carolina Scholastic State Champion at his grade level. As one of the top scholastic players in the state, he most recently tied for 2nd and 4rd at the NC State High School Championship in the past two years. Derek has also frequently been in the top 100 chess players of the nation by age. In addition to this, he has been a coach of the
Spears YMCA Youth Chess Club since its inception in 2011.
