Stuart Howard Sport Director at YMCA of Greensboro at FIFA
July 25, 2025

When you think of global soccer tournaments, Greensboro might not be the first place that comes to mind—but for Stuart Howard, Sports Director at the Bryan Family YMCA, the world stage isn’t so far away.

Recently returning from a standout assignment with FIFA during the Club World Cup, Stuart brought back a wealth of experience, perspective, and pride. From managing logistics for an international soccer team to leading volunteers under high stakes, his journey is a testament to where passion for community and sports can take you.

Learn about his experience applying his YMCA experience to FIFA!

Q: How was your transition back to the Y after your time with FIFA?

A: It's been good. I had a lot of emails to catch up on, but most were manageable. A lot were from platforms like Nextdoor or from parents with questions about basketball season, which started while I was away. Things have calmed down since then.

Q: Can you share more about what your FIFA role involved?

A: I was a Team Services Venue Officer for FIFA during the Club World Cup. Unlike the regular World Cup with national teams, this tournament featured professional club teams from around the world—teams from England, Spain, Brazil, the U.S., and more. I was assigned to work with Palmeiras, a Brazilian team based in São Paulo.

Q: What were your main responsibilities?

A: I served as the liaison between Palmeiras and UNCG, where they trained. If the team needed the field watered before training, I would coordinate that. If they wanted a closed training with no media, I arranged security. I also managed a team of about 10 volunteers, handled logistics like luggage and transportation, and ensured the hotel, Grandover, met their needs for meals and accommodation.

Q: What was it like leading volunteers in that setting?

A: It was a great experience, and I think my time at the Y prepared me well. At the Y, I manage 30–40 volunteer coaches each season. I applied what I’ve learned—like giving volunteers clear, direct assignments rather than open-ended ones. That helped keep everyone engaged and ensured things got done efficiently.

Q: What cultural insights did you gain from the experience?

A: It was eye-opening. Many Palmeiras fans traveled from Brazil and followed the team everywhere. They said it was safer and easier to watch training here than in Brazil. It helped me understand different backgrounds and reinforced how important it is to be culturally aware—especially since our downtown branch welcomes such a diverse community.

Q: What did you take away that you plan to apply back at the Y?

A: Cultural sensitivity, for sure. Working in a diverse environment means being mindful of communication styles, body language, and personal background. This experience reinforced the need to build connections across those differences.

Q: Would you recommend this kind of experience to others?

A: Absolutely. FIFA treated us well—as partners, not just temporary staff. They gave us free tickets, daily Uber Eats vouchers, and other perks. It was a short-term contract, but they invested in us. If this role had been full-time, I would’ve seriously considered staying.

Q: How did the Y support your decision to take the opportunity?

A: It was a tough call, but I’m grateful. I talked with Lesley [Watts], and she was open to it. She worked with HR, and eventually I was given the green light. Marcus Stockton and others covered for me while I was gone, which was amazing. I came back to a functioning program—that meant a lot.

Q: Any final thoughts?

A: Just that I’d jump at the chance to do it again—especially with the World Cup coming to the U.S. next year. If UNCG is selected as a host site, I hope I get to be part of it again.

Now back at the Y, Stuart continues to lead with the same energy and heart he brought to the world’s game. His story is just one example of how YMCA careers empower individuals to grow personally and professionally—while making a difference right here at home.
