A shared passion for classic cars and years of hard work paid off in a memorable way at the Hayes-Taylor Memorial YMCA Larry Burnett Car Show on June 27.

Teen winner Laylon took home top honors with a beautifully restored 1969 Mark I Mustang, a vehicle made even more special because it was restored alongside his grandfather and eventually gifted to him.

The restoration was truly a labor of love. Laylon's grandfather explained that the family purchased the Mustang in New Jersey before bringing it home to begin an extensive restoration.

"We bought it from New Jersey...and it took three years," Mr. Robinson, Laylon's grandfather said. "We've had it now since 2013, it's been finished. I gave it to my grandson, Laylon, and he is going to drive it, hopefully."

The grandfather also shared why the car belongs to Laylon today. "So it's his car now. I've given the title to him and everything," he said. For Laylon, the gift represents much more than a classic car.

"It meant everything. I'm not going to lie," says Laylon. "I really like that he gave me it, and I can't wait to drive it. I feel like it meant everything, honestly. I'm happy that he gave it to me."

The project also became an opportunity to learn alongside his grandfather. Laylon helped clean and work on the Mustang throughout the restoration process and says he's continuing to build his automotive knowledge.

"I helped clean it up and everything like that," he said. "I'm still learning from him though."

The Hayes-Taylor Memorial YMCA Car Show celebrates more than impressive vehicles. It brings neighbors, families and generations together to share stories, preserve traditions and create lasting memories. Laylon's award-winning Mustang serves as a reminder that some of life's greatest treasures are built through time spent together.
