Spears Unique Programs
Home School Physical Education allows home school students to learn and experience physical education from a trained YMCA staff member. Our program is designed to suit a wide age range and ability level while affordably fitting into your budget. Our program combines exercise and fun with a comprehensive curriculum to give your children a foundation for a strong mind & body. Our YMCA staff member will cover a variety of sports, aerobic activities & many other fun games. The class is made up of four 6-week sessions – 1 hour each week.
Tae Kwon Do
The Spears YMCA in partnership with the Greensboro Black Belt Academy offers Tae Kwon Do at three locations for children and adults.
We are an alliance that focuses on welcoming people on the Autism Spectrum. The Spears Family YMCA, in collaboration with local autism groups, runs a program for Adults with Autism and other communication disorders who have trouble with social interactions.
QUAD F is dedicated to developing friendships, motivating each other, having fun and promoting fitness, fusion and community engagement. During the program, the participants will eat together and do at least two of the following activities: swim, basketball, yoga, workout in fitness room, etc. This program was made possible through a challenge grant from the Tannenbaum-Sternberger Foundation and the William A. Stern Foundation. QUAD F is recommended for adults who can participate in a social group independently. To ensure that the group is most beneficial for all, participants must complete an interview prior to enrollment.

MS Water Fitness
A class designed for people with MS to help with daily functions. Workouts are designed to increase muscular strength and mobility. This class meets Monday, Wednesday, Friday at 11 am.
This Spears Y class allows you to exercise without putting excess strain on your joints and muscles. The gentle activities in warm water, with guidance from an MS Society-certified instructor, will help you gain strength and balance, increase circulation and maintain or improve range-of-motion.

Beginner Chess Class
Ages: Students 8-15 years old
Dates and Times: Mondays, September 30 - November 18, 2019; 6:00-6:55pm
Child Watch 2
Cost: $30 Members, $45 Potential Members
- Improve critical thinking, problem-solving, and mathematical and reading ability.
- Learn the elements and strategies of chess.
- Enjoy the game for recreational purposes or to enter chess as a competitive sport with opportunities to compete in scholastic and United States Chess Federation competitions.
- Become acquainted with the basic elements of the game, how pieces move, rules of capture, basic combinations, elementary strategy, and checkmate.
Rahul Jakati is a junior at the Early College of Guilford and has been playing chess for over 8 years. He has been a part of the Spears YMCA Chess Program for the same amount of time, from being taught to now teaching a class to help develop the next generation of chess players. He has over 100 rated tournament victories and is one of the top scholastic players in the state. He has numerous 1st place finishes in a variety of tournaments and is experienced at both playing and teaching chess. He is a member of the Early College at Guilford Chess Team and helped them reach consecutive placings in the county tournament. He enjoys coaching chess and has been doing so at the Spears Chess Club for the last two years.
Rochan Bakthisaran is also a junior at the Early College of Guilford and has been playing chess for about 4 years. He's the president of the Early College of Guilford Chess Team and also has been teaching his own chess class for the past 4 years. He has played in many rated chess tournaments with good results, earning the designation of a class A player. Rochan is looking forward to continuing to teaching kids chess in partnership with the YMCA as he has done for the past year.

Purpose: To allow youth and adults to play and practice their skills to improve their critical thinking and strategies against their peers in a fun, friendly environment. Through Chess Club, youth and adults will experience growth by playing with people of all levels. The ultimate goal is to encourage everyone to gain confidence in their discipline and love for the game.
This is a volunteer-driven club! At the Y, we believe that when people come together for a common cause, the whole community is strengthened. Thank you to the volunteers who have agreed to supervise the Chess Club every Friday evening.
