Empowering the Next Generation
Leadership Beyond Teen Outreach is a dynamic and empowering initiative designed to foster leadership skills, personal development, and community engagement among middle and high school students in the Greensboro area. Offered by the YMCA of Greensboro, this program is an excellent opportunity for schools—both public and charter—to bring leadership training directly to their campuses.
Over the years, the YMCA has provided this service to hundreds of students at charter and public schools throughout Guilford County, helping them build confidence, enhance their leadership abilities, and develop a passion for community impact.
Available from August through May, Leadership Beyond Teen Outreach offers flexible options, including single-day workshops and multi-session leadership programs tailored to meet the unique needs of your students. Each session features engaging activities and meaningful experiences designed to inspire and equip teens to become confident leaders capable of making a positive impact in their schools and communities.
Improving leadership skills can help young people prepare to solve community problems and enhances civic participation. Apart from leadership skills, the Y Leadership program can guide youth to improving other skills, such as goal-setting, problem-solving and decision-making.

Workshop 1: Public Speaking Workshop
October 13, 2026 | 5:30 p.m. – 7 p.m. | Bryan YMCA
Title: Speaking Out Starts from Within
This dynamic and empowering workshop is designed specifically for teens who want to build confidence, find their voice, and communicate with clarity and impact. "Speaking Out Starts from Within" focuses on the foundational truth that powerful public speaking begins with self-awareness, authenticity, and inner confidence.
Participants will learn:
- Techniques to overcome stage fright and anxiety
- How to structure and deliver compelling speeches
- Body language, vocal projection, eye contact, and presence
- Storytelling methods to engage audiences effectively
- Impromptu speaking skills for real-world situations
- Strategies for speaking in school, community, college interviews, and leadership settings
Through interactive exercises, small group practice, video recording with feedback, and guided reflection, teens will discover that authentic self-expression starts internally and radiates outward. By the end of the workshop, participants will have the tools and confidence to speak out powerfully in any setting. Ideal for emerging leaders, students preparing for college, or anyone ready to step into their voice.
Format: Interactive, hands-on sessions with practice opportunities and constructive feedback.

Workshop 2: Resume Building & Networking Workshop

Title: Building Better: Resumes, LinkedIn & Strategic Connections
This practical, forward-focused leadership workshop equips teens with essential career and professional development skills. Participants will learn how to professionally present themselves on paper and online while building a strong foundation for future opportunities through service, work experience, and networking.
Participants will learn:
- How to build a strong, achievement-focused service (volunteer) resume and work resume tailored for high school students
- Best practices for formatting, using powerful action verbs, and highlighting leadership, impact, and skills
- Creating a professional LinkedIn profile from scratch — including headline, summary, experience, and education sections
- Navigating LinkedIn effectively: privacy settings, content strategy, and engagement
- Strategies for connecting with individuals, mentors, organizations, and professionals who can support their growth
- How to request recommendations, message people thoughtfully, and build authentic professional relationships
Teens will leave with a polished resume draft, a completed LinkedIn profile, and a personalized networking action plan. This workshop emphasizes turning volunteer work, school activities, and personal projects into compelling professional narratives.
Format: Hands-on, interactive session with real-time profile and resume building, peer review, and practical networking exercises.
Outcome: Participants gain confidence in professional self-presentation and concrete tools to start networking and positioning themselves for college admissions, scholarships, internships, and future career success.
