Splash into Safety
Greensboro, N.C., July 3, 2025 — The YMCA of Greensboro is making waves this summer with the official kickoff of its Safety Around Water program, made possible by a generous grant from POOLCORP.
The 2025 SWiMPACT! Kick-off celebration was held July 1, 2025 at Warnersville Pool, located at 601 Doak Street, where approximately 45 local youth will participate in free YMCA Safety Around Water Swim Lessons designed to build confidence and save lives.
Through engaging 30-minute sessions starting at 4:30 p.m., certified YMCA instructors will teach children essential water safety skills such as swim-float-swim, jump-push-turn-grab, and how to stay safe around pools, beaches, and boats.
“At the Y, we believe every child deserves the chance to feel safe and strong in the water,” says Bethany Williard, Associate Executive Director at Spears Family YMCA and YMCA of Greensboro’s Safety Around Water Coordinator. “Thanks to POOLCORP and our partnership with Greensboro Parks and Recreation, we’re proud to offer these vital lessons at no cost to families in our community.”
The YMCA’s Safety Around Water program addresses a critical need. According to the CDC, two children die from drowning every day, and 60% of incidents happen within 10 feet of safety. The program targets youth who have not had prior swim instruction and equips them with the tools they need to enjoy the water safely. This YMCA program is designed to bridge the gap in access to swim lessons for families who may not be able to afford them.
Since 2022, nearly 3,000 children have participated in this lifesaving program through POOLCORP’s support. In addition to youth swim lessons, this year’s grant will also fund American Red Cross Lifeguard Training, expanding access to aquatic career pathways.
