Nothing says summer quite like a pool party. But while you're diving into fun, it's essential to keep safety top of mind. At the YMCA, we believe that everyone deserves the chance to enjoy water safely—and that starts with being informed. Here are expert tips from our water safety team to help ensure your poolside gathering is both fun and secure for all ages:

  1. Designate a Water Watcher
Choose a responsible adult to serve as the “Water Watcher”—someone whose sole job is to actively supervise swimmers without distractions. No phones, books, or side conversations—just eyes on the water at all times.
  2. Know Who Can Swim
Evaluate each guest's swimming ability before they enter the pool. Ensure non-swimmers wear properly fitted, Coast Guard-approved life jackets. Remember, inflatable toys and noodles are not safety devices.
  3. Secure the Pool Area
All pools should be surrounded by a fence at least four feet high with self-closing, self-latching gates. This prevents unsupervised access and helps create a safer environment for children.
  4. Steer Clear of Drains
Teach swimmers to stay away from pool drains and suction fittings. Hair or clothing can get trapped, posing a serious entrapment hazard.
  5. Be Prepared for Emergencies
Ensure that someone present knows CPR and that everyone is aware of your emergency action plan. Equip your space with rescue tools and a phone for emergencies.
  6. Set and Share Clear Rules
Communicate pool rules upfront: 1) No running near the pool; 2) No diving in shallow areas; 3) No breath-holding games; 4) Stay hydrated with plenty of water; 5)Apply and reapply sunscreen (SPF 30 or higher recommended).
  7. Embrace Sun Safety
Encourage sunscreen use and provide shaded areas for guests to cool off. Dermatologists recommend using broad-spectrum SPF 30 or higher to block 97% of harmful UVB rays.
