Learn lifesaving skills! The YMCA Lifeguarding course provides participants with the knowledge and skills to prevent, recognize and respond to aquatic emergencies and to provide professional-level care for breathing and cardiac emergencies, injuries and sudden illnesses until emergency medical services (EMS) personnel take over.

Want to take this course for free? You could, thanks to a grant from PoolCorp! To take advantage of this offer, you must successfully complete the below swim requirements prior to registering for the class. Contact the Bryan Y, Hayes-Taylor Y, Reidsville Y or Spears Y Aquatics Director to complete the swim requirements and register for the course.

Prerequisite Swim Requirements

•    Swim 150 yards (freestyle or breaststroke)
•    Immediately tread water for 2 minutes (hands are in armpits or above the surface of the water and keeping face at or near the surface)
•    Immediately swim 50 yards (freestyle or breaststroke)
•    Start in the shallow end and swim 20 yards, surface dive 7-10 feet and retrieve a 10-pound object, swim back to the starting point on your back holding the object. Once at the wall, place the object on the wall and hop out. You will have 1 minute 40 seconds to complete the circuit.
